During a free dive competition, without any breathing equipment, Yang Yun’s legs cramped up and she she sank to the bottom of a 20 foot arctic pool, unable to swim to the top. Yun said,
“I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me – I was dead. Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface.”
The Beluga whale Mila sensed Yun’s difficulties and gently guided Yun safely to the surface. Wow.
Intelligent Belugas were among the first whales to interact with man and have facial muscles that allow them to smile.
